Vidyasagar School of Social Work (VSSW) under Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change is the only School of Social Work run by a NGO in eastern India. The masters degree programme on social work of the Institute was started in 1995 under Vidayasagar University. From its very days of inception, the School of Social Work received active patronage and support from leading academics, senior professionals, Government and other non-Government organizations in terms of policy planning, networking with other schools of social work, training and placement of students. Over the years, VSSW has emerged as one of the leading school of social work for developing skills, knowledge and values appropriate to the social work profession. The students who have passed out of the institute have been absorbed in leading Government/non-Government/funding organizations Apart from successful grooming of professional social workers, VSSW and its parent body, Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change (JPISC) have been instrumental in developing a rich resource of knowledge on developmental studies, research methodologies and applied social sciences in the process synergizing the theoretical aspects of social work as espoused by VSSW with field level action oriented activities of JPISC ranging from capacity building to research studies and community development.

In its strive to excel in the field of social work, the key strength of VSSW lies in its experienced faculty members who have in-depth knowledge on professional training of prospective social workers while imbuing professional ethics and promoting value based education amongst the student fraternity. Distinguished personalities from various sectors like rural and urban development, applied psychology, human resource development, legal matters including crime and correctional administration etc who occupy very senior positions in their respective fields are also invited to deliver lectures. The library of the Vidyasagar School of Social Work serves as a rich source of reference for the students, teaching faculty, staff, researchers and other professionals in the field. It has a wide variety of books on social work, behavioural science, development studies, economics, right based issues etc and is regularly consulted even by professionals from other institutes.

The Job Placement Cell functions in response to a much-expressed need of the students i.e. placing the right candidate in the right job. The job placement mechanism of the School of Social Work actively interacts with NGOs, Govt. organizations and other private sector organizations to understand their manpower requirements and help them select the right candidate accordingly. Regular counselling session is organized for the students to make them aware of the opportunities available in various sectors and groom them accordingly. The concept of Block Placements of the students in reputed Govt./non-Govt. organizations is to groom them for taking assignments in challenging environment in the near future.
