Rehabilitation & Resettlement

Rehabilitation & Resettlement issues have become increasingly important in the present times with increased development activities leading to involuntary displacement of people. The Institute has undertaken a number of rehabilitation and resettlement projects including preparation of action plan for resettlement of Project Affected People (PAF), their rehabilitation amidst the host community, improving their quality of life through various development initiatives.

A summary of the Rehabilitation & Resettlement programmes undertaken by the Institute are:
Environment & Social Mitigation Project (ESMP) in Rajrappa OCP under Central Coalfields Ltd sponsored by World Bank (1997-2001). The key responsibility was implementation of indigenous people's development plan through formation of resettlement groups, resource mapping of the area for their sustainable development, capacity building of the PAFs for their income restoration etc.

Implementation of Rehabilitation & Resettlement of Canal Bank Dwellers of Kolkata under Kolkata Environment Improvement Programme (KEIP) sponsored by Asian Development Bank (2005-06). The key responsibilities were economic rehabilitation of women through livelihood assessment and capacity building, IEC campaigns on project issues and entitlement of the PAFs, awareness building on various socio-economic issues, facilitation of community participation in the R & R project through formation of resettlement groups etc.

Social Mapping on R & R at selected villages of Barabani, Asanasol sponsored by ICML (CESC Ltd.) The study was undertaken as an initial input to framing and subsequent implementation of the R & R programme of ICML in the said region.
